Traditional Five Element acupuncture

Looking beyond symptoms to understand the whole you.

Could acupuncture be right for you?

If you’re considering acupuncture but aren’t sure whether it could be suitable for you, you’re welcome to get in touch. You don’t need to choose a treatment before we speak.

I practise Traditional Five Element Acupuncture, with an approach that considers your physical symptoms alongside how you feel and what is happening in your life.

Start with your individual needs

Your first appointment includes a detailed discussion of your symptoms, medical history, lifestyle and what you hope to gain from treatment. We’ll talk about your current medicines and any other care you’re receiving, so that suitability can be considered in the context of your overall health.

What can you expect?

We’ll discuss a treatment plan and review how you’re feeling at follow-up appointments. Responses vary, and a particular result or number of sessions cannot be guaranteed.

Acupuncture is a complementary therapy. It should not replace medical assessment or essential treatment. Please continue to seek advice from your GP about persistent or concerning symptoms, and do not stop prescribed medicines without speaking to your doctor.

Evidence and suitability

Evidence for acupuncture varies according to the condition and the type of treatment studied. Research about one use of acupuncture does not establish that it is effective for every condition, or that every approach has the same evidence.

For independent information, read the NHS guide to complementary therapies, including acupuncture. If you have questions about your circumstances, we can discuss them before you book.

Conditions treated

Traditional Acupuncture works by stimulating your body’s natural ability to heal itself. This means that anyone can benefit from treatment.

Many people find acupuncture a beneficial treatment option for a range of disorders and symptoms. This, by no means a comprehensive list, includes:

  • Cancer care
  • Circulatory conditions – Reynaud’s syndrome
  • Chronic fatigue & low energy
  • Digestive issues
  • Gynaecological – period pains, endometriosis, breech baby, delayed labour
  • Headaches & migraines, tinnitus
  • Mens health & wellbeing – erectile issues
  • Womens health & wellbeing
  • Emotional – stress, anxiety, depression
  • Musculoskeletal – pain, stiffness, arthritis, sciatica
  • Respiratory – asthma, allergies, bronchitis, rhinitis
  • Skin conditions – psoriasis, eczema, acne
  • Sleep Problems – insomnia
  • Urinary issues

The Five Element approach

Traditional Five Element Acupuncture is an ancient system of medicine that originated in China over 2000 years ago. Traditional Acupuncture philosophy believes that our health is dependent on the body’s motivating energy known as Qi (pronounced as ‘chi’). Qi runs throughout our bodies along a series of meridians (channels) throughout our body.

How does Acupuncture work?

Acupuncture works to help maintain your body’s equilibrium. When your inner balance is wrong then you may experience symptoms on a physical, mental or emotional level.

What’s the point of Acupuncture?

Acupuncture acts as both a treatment and preventative medicine. The aim of your individual diagnosis and subsequent course of treatment is to get a picture of your whole health. I will look for the root of any current problems, as well as identify any potential areas of weakness which by using acupuncture can strengthen. This goes beyond the temporary alleviation of your current symptoms.

By inserting fine needles into the channels of energy, an acupuncturist can stimulate the body’s own healing response and help restore its natural balance.

What is five Element Acupuncture?

Five Element Acupuncture has the potential to create for you a new way of being, thinking and feeling, to bring more vitality and an enhanced enjoyment of life.

This works by treating you, the person, not just your physical and emotional symptoms. The aim is to get to the root of the imbalance or illness.

Your body is a living library of information storing memories and emotions from life’s experience. Energy pathways known as meridians become disturbed or blocked, which can lead to emotional distress or physical illness.

The treatment works by stimulating these pathways and your body’s natural healing mechanism, bringing you back into balance, and encouraging physical, mental and spiritual well-being.

I went to try accupuncture with Ruth after I had a severe, unexplainable illness which the gps couldn't explain and I lost my strength and cognitive abilities. She's been absolutely amazing.. after the first session i slept like a baby and regained my strength....9 sessions later I've almost completely recovered, am back at the gym and my anxiety has almost disappeared...will be going back for top up treatments!

Treatment was hugely beneficial and significantly contributed to the improvement in my overall wellbeing. Ruth was also able to signpost me to other health checks I needed to consider, whilst completing acupuncture treatment to improve the presenting condition.

Whilst I was sceptical beforehand, I was encouraged by my family to give acupuncture a go to relieve the considerable pain I was experiencing. I was fortunate to identify Sutton Accupuncture as having a positive reputation. That reputation is well founded. Ruth Wallis is a learned, caring, expert practitioner. I particularly liked her wholistic approach in tackling and reducing my aches and pains . My scepticism was swept away and putting my trust in Ruth's practice and professionalism has paid dividends for me. I am now substantially pain free and have no hesitation whatsoever in commending Sutton Accupunture to you.

I cannot recommend Ruth enough! She has been absolutely amazing throughout my treatment. From the very first session, she took the time to really listen, understand my concerns, and tailor each appointment to suit my needs. Her approach is not only incredibly professional but also warm, caring, and genuinely supportive. I’ve noticed such a positive improvement in both my physical and mental wellbeing since starting acupuncture with her. If you’re looking for a practitioner who truly goes above and beyond, look no further , you’re in the best hands!

Ruth is a friendly, very professional and knowledgeable acupuncturist. She thoroughly explained the process of what she would be doing, which made me feel comfortable. The room was clean and warm which made me relaxed. I have seen wonderful improvements and am feeling much better now. Can’t recommend enough!

I reached out to Ruth when I was first diagnosed with a complex autoimmune condition and in a tremendous amount of daily pain. I was genuinely desperate and willing to try anything that might help. I thank my lucky stars that I stumbled upon Ruth, as the difference that her treatment has made on my health is remarkable. Her approach is a holistic one, and in the 18 months I have been visiting her, she has worked wonders on my physical health, pain levels and emotional wellbeing. The treatments offered sit alongside the traditional western medicine offered by my GP and consultant, but I truly believe that - in addition to independently helping with my pain levels and inflammation - the acupuncture has enabled the traditional medication to work most effectively. The treatments offered are adapted at each session to provide the most benefit and impact to her clients. She is patient, kind and understanding, and is happy to tailor her treatment to your needs, whether you need a weekly appointment or an ad hoc session when your condition flares twice a year. I cannot recommend her highly enough. Go with an open mind, and see for yourself the impact she and her treatments are able to have.

I've been a patient of Ruth's for a couple of years now. Her knowledgeable, kind, patient, and professional demeanour has always put me at ease. So much so that our daughter now visits as well. She has become an invaluable part of my well-being, helping me navigate not only physical aches and pains but also the emotional challenges life throws my way. Her treatments have made a significant difference in my life; I’d wholeheartedly recommend her services to anyone.
